In planning the construction of the new corporate headquarters,
General Motors of Canada Limited created a study team consisting
of environmental consultants and engineers among others, but also
requested assistance from several non-government environmental organizations
and worked in harmony with these various groups to ensure that nature
and the environment would be protected. Special care was taken to
ensure that building height would not interfere with migratory bird
flight patterns.
The
four-story building has tinted glass and special lighting to reduce
the threat of collision for nocturnal bird migrants.
The energy-efficient air conditioning system in use
at GM of Canada's headquarters building is an innovative energy
management technology for providing comfort in the building. The
technology allows utility costs to be reduced by shifting part of
the electrical load to off-peak hours.
Thermal ice cooling storage is provided by using conventional ice-making
equipment to charge the storage medium during night-time hours.
During peak periods, indoor cooling is provided by circulating chilled
liquid from the thermal storage medium to cool the building.
