Trees, Shrubs and Wildflowers

While vegetation is fundamental to the ecological values of the area, no detailed inventory of species for the entire area has been completed. Vegetation is significant for its role in the provision of habitat for fish and wildlife. A variety of vegetation ensures food and cover for a diverse fauna.

A study for the Second Marsh Wildlife Area was undertaken in the 1980's (Cecile, 1983, Environment Canada) which documented 361 vascular (not including mosses, lichens, etc.) plants. Of these, 42 species were considered regionally rare or uncommon and two species, wild rye (Elymus riparius) and bushy cinquefoil (Potentilla paradoxa) were Provincially rare.
